Horbury Academy Celebrated by Ofsted for Exceptional Culture, High Standards and Inclusive Practice

Horbury Academy has been recognised by Ofsted for its “positive culture, supportive atmosphere and high expectations” following a January 2026 inspection. This was the academy’s first inspection under Ofsted’s revised ‘report card’ model, which replaces single-word judgements with a more detailed breakdown of performance across key areas. We are extremely pleased that the report recognises the many strengths of Horbury Academy and reflects the positive culture we have worked hard to build. The new approach is designed to give families a clearer, more nuanced understanding of school life.

Strong Achievement and High-Quality Teaching

The report highlights that both Achievement and Curriculum and Teaching are at a strong standard, something that we are incredibly proud of. Inspectors found that pupils are inquisitive, motivated and able to learn independently, and that they consistently achieve outcomes which are significantly above their peers nationally. Within curriculum and teaching, the academy has high expectations for how lessons should be taught which is closely aligned with a strong curriculum. Finally, the curriculum and teaching approaches used within the academy effectively support pupils to achieve excellent outcomes.

Inclusive Practice and Support for SEND Learners

The academy’s strengthened provision for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) was recognised as a significant strength. Under the Inclusion category, inspectors commended the school’s commitment to disadvantaged pupils and the effectiveness of personalised support and intervention.

The report states: “Staff receive high-quality training that helps them to break down barriers to learning… Partnership working with professionals, parents and outside agencies is highly effective. Several projects the school is involved in are innovative and are beginning to make a significant difference to disadvantaged pupils’ education and wellbeing.”

Exemplary Behaviour and a Respectful Culture

Although Ofsted now groups Attendance and Behaviour together, inspectors made a clear distinction between the two. Behaviour at Horbury Academy was described in exceptionally positive terms. The report states: “Lessons are calm and focused. Disruption to lessons is rare. There is a purposeful learning environment around the academy, something all staff work hard to ensure remains high priority. Pupils demonstrate excellent attitudes to their education. Social times are calm and orderly. Older pupils are often role models to younger ones.” Inspectors also commented on the respectful culture that has been firmly established across the academy.

Leadership Response

Nick Ash, Head of Academy, said: “We are very pleased with this extremely positive report. I encourage all parents and carers to read the report card in full to gain a detailed understanding of each section.

“As one of the first schools assessed under the new Ofsted framework, it is reassuring to see the many strengths of our school recognised so clearly. The one area identified for further focus is already a priority for us, and the detail of this report gives us clarity and confidence about where to continue investing our efforts.

“Our staff remain absolutely committed to our pupils. While we are proud of our excellent outcomes, we also know that education is about much more than results – it is about providing exceptional opportunities, experiences and care for every young person. We have made significant improvements since our last inspection, and we are confident that this upward trajectory will continue.”
